Past strike two

Founded in 2017 in Amsterdam, StrikeTwo has emerged as the premier destination for changemakers merging technology, agriculture and the global food system. Check out the status of past tracks and view the speakers who have graced the StrikeTwo stage.

Track outcomes

The innovation roadmap the StrikeTwo methodology results in lays the groundwork for a successful year, post summit. Some tracks will grow into fully-funded projects, some tracks will stall or close, and others will evolve into completely unique propositions and collaborations.

 Track status 2020

Transparant

Aims to combine the digital and physical world to capitalise on the benefits of technology and social trends to make nutrition and sustainability information available, accessible and affordable to consumers and growers, enabling all to have healthy and sustainable diets.

Due to the continued shutdown of the catering/restaurant industry as a result of COVID-19, the track ambitions cannot be realised at this time. Current activity is centred around securing funding to realise the track roadmap when physical events are again viable.

Status: paused

Croppie

A follow-on from the CGIAR Inspire challenge, Croppie further refind it’s low-cost way to generate large volumes of ground-truthing photographic data while focusing on the benefits available to smallholder farmers.

Update: Croppie is currently gathering the photographic images to go into the machine learning programme. In addition, they are working with a design agency who specialise in human/app interaction. Croppie was connected by S2 organisers to an open call by GIZ and have submitted their expression of interest.

Status: very active

N-Allyzer

The N-Allyzer app will assist farmers in making optimal economic decision on fertilizer application rates with minimal user input. Unlike the traditional nutrient calculators, the app only requires mobile phone pictures of maize or wheat leaves and answers to a few key questions on farming to generate fertilizer recommendations, customised using big data analytics and simulations.

Update: N-Allyzer was connected by S2 organisers to an open call by GIZ for additional funding.

Status: very active

Sustainable Open Soy

Sustainable Open Soy continued on from 2019 There is a shared conclusion that a good estimate of the current share of sustainable soy in the Netherlands is essential. Ahold Delhaize has refined it’s 2020 ambition by knowing the current share of deforestation-free soy entering the Netherlands.

Update: Ahold Delhaize, USFRA and The New Fork created a proposal for the Soy Innovation Challenge where they were a finalists. This has evolved to a potential pilot with Coppens and Nevedi and in addition, USSEC is interested in further discussions.

Status: very active

FishFeedChain

Fish feed chain will provide a user-friendly, reliable way to trace fish products, including embedded fish feed, further back in the supply chain than ever before. A consortium of partners will collaborate to drive further development of fish feed chain, with a special focus on tracking attributes related to labour conditions.

Update: A design phase has started with partners Ahold Delhaize & The New Fork, with additional support from IDH and input from S2 FishFeedChain track participants.

Track status 2019

Food safety

Demonstrated that suppliers and vendors positively position themselves in the market by using blockchain to share verifiable data. Conclusion is that the blockchain can help make food identifiable to consumers, just as travelers are identifiable to airport security

Update: IBM has entered into bilateral contracts with technology-providing track participants in order to initiative in a focused manner.

Status: stopped

Food Quality

Concluded that farmers can increase their output and improve their performance by exchanging data with sellers and consumers. Demonstrated that blockchain has the potential to increase the impact of consumers on the environment and the fishing industry. Informed meat producers brand positioning can be enhanced by using blockchain and sharing data with consumers.

Update: Partnership between ScanTrust and The New Fork. Partnership between ScanTrust and Traseable.

Status: very active

Circularity

Connected all parties in the bread supply chain together, with the aim of researching and connecting their ingredients via blockchain to ensure food quality and sustainability for conscious customers.

Update: Partnership with the Spark LivingLab that is looking for further continuation of the use case with original or new partners

Status: stopped, possibility of restart

Farmer Identity

It has emerged there is a need for an action plan to increase farmers’ income by providing them with a digital identity, connectivity, and a platform for data exchange. A pilot program is underway, with the aim of reaching 20000 farmers worldwide, spread over 4 different crops.

Update: Partnership between Bluenumber and Blooom and Bluenumber and FAO

Status: very active

New Business Models

Investigated alternative business models to finance agricultural initiatives. For example, tokenization of the Boeren van Amstel with a milk token is a possibility that allows loyal customers to pay for the product with a token and thus pre-finance the company in exchange for a discount. The Share Council platform was identified as a medium-term funding model as it will enable supporters to take an economic stake in the success of the initiative.

Update: Collectively brought dairy farmers into direct contact with investor and the catering industry (new customers).

Status: active

Carbon Neutral Farming

Discussed how soil carbon sequestration practices could translate into reduced gas emissions and agricultural income. The proposal is to develop technical solution that can detect and quantify carbon deposition in the soil and turn this into a revenue model for farmers using blockchain, the example here is planting trees to compensate for air travel.

Update: The ESTI partners were connected by S2 organisers to an open call by GIZ.

Status: very active

Sustainable Open Soy

There is a shared conclusion that a good estimate of the current share of sustainable soy in the Netherlands is essential. Ahold Delhaize has refined it’s 2020 ambition by knowing the current share of deforestation-free soy entering the Netherlands.

Update: The Sustainable Open Soy track continued in the 2020 StrikeTwo Summit.

Status: very active

Compliance

Intended to influence consumers’ purchasing decisions by stimulating sustainable purchasing. Because we want to make sustainability viable, we realised that as consumer demand for sustainable products increases, so does the economic viability of the companies and organisations that invest in a sustainable supply chain, production processes and labour.

Update: Due to COVID-19 there were unfortunately no resources to continue the project.

Status: stopped

Smallholder Living Income

10,000 farmers should generate a viable income by digitising their supply chains through investments in data infrastructure (eg: creating digital IDs, delivering socio-economic and environmental performance data easily and quickly, visualised on user-friendly dashboards and tools).

Update: Due to COVID-19 the project with the tea traders from Uganda has been paused.
